A polite and soft look at life in an English village in the 1820's. While this novel stands alone, it really helps to read The Innkeeper of Ivy Hill first to familiarize yourself with the many characters of the village, as they carry forth into The Ladies and the plot deepens. It is astonishing to read how narrow minded the people are, and grudges or misconceptions from 30 years past still affecting their daily lives. Julie Klassen writes with both dignity and style.
