The Black Stallion is the first book in a series about a wild black stallion and Alec. Alec and this stallion is stranded on an island after the boat to America sinks in a bad storm. Alec is fascinated by this spirited stallion and successfully befriends it. When they are rescued, Alec is allowed to keep the stallion, partly because the stallion is wild and only trusts Alec. With the help of Henry, a former jockey, Alec learns to cooperate with this fierce stallion in hopes of becoming the best horse racer in America. I recommend this book to younger teenagers because the books are short and easy to understand. I rate this book a 5 out of 5 because it is such a well written book and I have loved all 20 books in this series. Catherine P., grade 11, of the Yorba Linda Teen Book Bloggers

The Black Stallion (known as the Black) is the title character from author Walter Farley's bestselling series about a magnificent horse and his young owner, Alec Ramsay.

This series chronicles the story of an Arab sheikh's prized stallion after he unexpectedly comes into Alec's possession..... (This book contains illustrations by Keith Ward, as well)

(*Author's Note*) - Originally from Syracuse, New York - Walter Farley (born June 26, 1915) was an American author, primarily of horse stories for children. His first and most famous work was The Black Stallion, which was first published in 1941. This book had many sequels.

On October 16, 1989 - Walter Farley (74 at the time) died of cancer.

I totally agree with wendybird! King of the Wind is the best, but the Black Stallion is also quite wonderful.

Glad to see the cover art here is the one I remember from my childhood! I read every book with a horse even mentioned in the text as a kid, and this one is my 2nd fav. ("King of the Wind" is my fav.). And - while the description here is accurate, people who ride & love horses will adore that Alec stables the horse in his suburban NYC neighbourhood & actually races him at Belmont Park...a fantasy come true for the horse crazy child!
