The year is 1348. Europe has fallen under the shadow of the Black death. As the plague decimates all in its path, fear and superstition are rife. There are rumors of a village, hidden in marshland that the plague cannot reach. There is even talk of a necromancer who leads the village and is able to bring the dead back to life. Ulric, a fearsome knight, is charged by the church to investigate these rumors.

Dark , plague, gore, bleak and Gothic horror. Great film! Sean Bean (Ulric) always gets killed, so that’s no surprise. Love Eddy Redmayne (Osmund). The educated and the ignorant clash like stripes and polka dots. Well acted. Glad I didn’t live in Medieval times.

What are good actors doing in this movie? (doing their best, in fact, bravo). Not awful, I kind of liked it, but definitely below average. Is this a horror genre? Maybe. God sends Eddie Redmayne's cheekbones on a wild trip to a creepy medieval village while everyone in the country is dying of bubonic plague.

A bit gory, but the special effects are authentic and require no suspension of belief. It's great seeing Sean Bean and a certain someone else playing roles very similar to what they did in Game of Thrones.

I was told that this film was a “period horror”, but no it was just horrible period.
The movie does nothing to make the viewers care at all about the characters before it starts killing them off. In fact, quite the opposite; the characters are portrayed to be real scum bags. This is a film that completely lacks heroes, and makes you ask why you care about the plight of the protagonists.
It also is crystal clear within the first ten minutes of the film that the writers didn’t bother to research either of the religions that feature prominently in the film. With ridiculous events, such a novice monk performing absolution.
I wouldn’t recommend this film to anyone.

Dark tale wrapped around the mysticism of pagans & the power of the Catholic church while the plague ravages England. Eddie Redmayne was fantastic as always, but I was very depressed by the end of the movie.

The DVD box says it is "a smart, scary occult thriller . . . darkly satisfying." I thought it was quite grim, then became rather creepy. Mixing a medieval setting with the black death /plague and ending with a group of crazies who do not believe in God during a very religious era. If you like dark and creepy you may enjoy it. Otherwise, keep browsing the DVD shelf, I'm sure something better is out there.

The title "The Black Death" is appropriate, since it's a new version of "The Heart of Darkness". (Sorry: the pun was there, so I had to take the opportunity). Or you could call it "Apocalypse 500 Years Ago".

Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne plays Osmund, a naive young monk who's not sure whether he wants to be a monk or go home to marry a girl from his village. She promises to wait for him in a glade downriver. When Sir Ulric (Sean Bean) is ordered to investigate a miraculously plague free village run by a notorious necromancer, Osmund goes along in hopes of finding the local lass.

So off they go downriver, in their boat which is named the "Canned Heat" (Whoops, I'm sorry; I meant "their nameless barge"), encountering various atrocities and oddities, until they reach the village, where the most gruesome discovery of all awaits.

This is a grim, moody picture, but if you're a Sean Bean/Eddie Redmayne fan or a Dark Ages nerd (like me), you'll enjoy it. "Game of Thrones" fans will be happy to see one of their favorite character actresses playing the necromancer. Must have been a fun discussion in "THe Game of Thrones" tea room.

Entertaining, better than most of the reviews gave it credit for.

Looks like Sean Bean came straight from Lord of the Rings for this movie! Not a bad movie. The Monk character is very hard to hear, fight scenes are jumpy and non-stabilized. The ending is a little unfulfilled. Could have been done better but worth a watch.

Kind of a fun movie. Takes place in 1348 and in addition to the splatter-fest,t here is actually a pretty interesting story here! The man in the role of the monk is played by the same man who played "Jack" in "Pillars of the Earth". The acting is very good all the way around.
