"From award-winning crime writer Belinda Bauer, "the true heir to the great Ruth Rendell" [Mail on Sunday (UK)], Snap is a gripping novel about a teenage boy's hunt for his mother's killer. Jack's in charge, said his mother as she disappeared up the road to get help. I won't be long. Now eleven-year-old Jack and his two sisters wait on the hard shoulder in their stifling, broken-down car, bickering and whining and playing I-Spy until she comes back. But their mother doesn't come back. She never comes back. And after that long, hot summer's day, nothing will ever be the same again. Three years later, Jack's fifteen now and still in charge . . . alone in the house. Meanwhile across town, a young woman called Catherine While wakes to find a knife beside her bed, and a note reading I could of killed you. The police are tracking a mysterious burglar they call Goldilocks, for his habit of sleeping in the beds of the houses he robs, but Catherine doesn't see the point of involving the police. And Jack, very suddenly, may be on the verge of finding out who killed his mother. A twisty, masterfully written novel that will have readers on the edge of their seats, Snap is Belinda Bauer at the height of her powers"-- Provided by publisher.

4 1/2 - 5 star read. This is one of the best thrillers I've read this year. This is the first book I've read by Bauer but I now plan to read all her books. Jack is a 15 year old boy who has been looking after his two sisters since his Mom was murdered and his Dad left them. He's become a very successful burglar who not only steals valuable items but also takes out his rage by trashing the homes he steals from. He creeps into the home of a young pregnant woman named Catherine, while she is sleeping and her husband is away. He leaves a knife and a note beside the bed "I could have killed you." Catherine does not call the police, but the police eventually find both her and Jack and that's when the story gets really interesting. I read this book in 24 hours, I just couldn't put it down. A great read.

Snap was an astute and connected story that I ended up adoring. It's a multi-layered, carefully plotted story loaded up with eccentric, unique characters and a holding plot – and at the focal point, all things considered, is a family all obliterated by the agony of one smashing, horrendous act. This story attracted me promptly and after I made sense of that it was truth be told, not a "whodunit" story. This book was a solid character-driven anecdote about silly misfortune, sadness, viciousness, fortitude, catastrophe, and treachery, yet in addition about expectation, endurance, benevolence and the affection for family. I would rate this book a solid 4/5.

A great read! A perfect blend of suspense and compassion. When the car breaks down Mom leaves to get help but she never comes back. 11 year old Jack takes charge of him and his 2 younger sisters. An unexpected tale of a young boy going to any lengths to keep them safe and ultimately find out what happened to his mother.

I am definitely in the minority on this book, at least among my fellow friends and reviewers, that I found this book okay. I listened to this one on audio and it was a bit slower paced for me and I found my mind wandering at times. I would read some other reviews on Goodreads as I was just lukewarm to this novel. I did love Bauer's [book:Rubbernecker|16071656] which I also listened to on audio and am absorbed in the story.

This was compelling and heartbreaking. It begins with 11 Jack in charge of his two sister after the car breaks down and pregnant mother goes to call for help. she is killed, father has a breakdown and disappears leaving Jack to keep the kids out of the hands of social services. He does so by breaking into homes and at one home sees the unique knife that killed his mother in one of the homes.

I was ready to write good things about this one up until I finished it anyway. The first 98% was a good mystery that stayed away from the action/thriller category but the ending was not good at all. Nothing was completed, it just ended. I have no idea of the final outcome of the investigation or who did what to whom. It sort of seemed like she was setting things up for Snap Part 2 or something. One odd thing was that some conversations between the 2 main cops were almost comedic at times. If you remember Smokey and the Bandit, it reminded me at times of conversations between Sheriff Buford T. Justice and his son, Junior. It just ended up being a strange book.

When a novel is (apparently) based on a real life murder, the novelist should acknowledge her debt.
1988 Murdered as she rang for help on a motorway: The mystery of pregnant Marie Wilks' horrific death--Marie was seven months pregnant when she was brutally killed leaving two young children stranded by the side of a motorway https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/murdered-rang-help-motorway-mystery-15186063
