The artists that matter most in some children's worlds are the illustrators of the books they love--though they rarely think consciously of those contributors to their imaginary worlds as artists. This is a wonderful book to awaken that awareness. Each four-page layout in this rich book offers not only a letter about the illustrator's art, but also a photo of the illustrator as a child, a childhood artwork by the illustrator, a photo of the illustrator in-studio or working outside, images of the illustrator's most well-known works, and a self-portrait. Once they are familiar with the format, children enjoy learning about individual artists and comparing them--though the younger the child, the more necessary an adult partner is for maneuvering through the book (each spread has a fold-out page).
