Breathtaking art, amazing world building. I really like the travel journal style of narration with alternating rough sketches and brilliant oil paintings. I wish I could live in dinotopia.

A tepidly pleasant fantasy which I am clearly too grown-up to have much appreciation for. The eco-radical message of this oh-so-squeaky-clean socialist-fantasy of a culture is very hamhanded, and far less believable than the idea of surviving dinosaurs. Probably not wise to expose young children to, lest their imaginations actually be captured by it. Once they're old enough to clearly separate fantasy from reality, they might be able to appreciate this saccharine parable as the light entertainment it should be seen as, before their tastes mature enough to be annoyed with how unsophisticated it is.

A fabulously imagined story. Great for family sharing. A book to keep an re-read.

* It's the ultimate dinosaur fantasy! A father and his teenage son are shipwrecked on an island where dinosaurs never went extinct. The dinosaurs are intelligent and live in harmony with the humans on the island.

* I love that this book is written in the form of a journal of scientific observations. My favorite parts were when the main character described the dinosaurs' inventions, including a reading machine and a spiral-shaped clock.

* But the illustrations are the best part of this book. They're absolutely enchanting.

* This is the first book in a series, and I'm hooked.

In 1862, Professor Arthur Denison and his son Will are shipwrecked on a tropical island. Almost immediately, they encounter strange signs of life?enormous footprints, mysterious noises, and bizarre animals. To Denison and Will?s immense surprise, the inhabitants of this island are dinosaurs who live in unity and harmony with humans. Dinotopia?the name is the island?is a peaceful, innovative, cooperative society. Denison and Will are expected to contribute their skills as well and journey across the island to register at Waterfall City. Along the way, they befriend Dinotopia?s human and dinosaur citizens and observe first-hand the extraordinary workings of this unique?but still mysterious and even dangerous?world. Author James Gurney presents this sophisticated picture book as Arthur Denison?s journal. As such, it is filled with scientific observations and beautiful, realistic portraits of the people, creatures, and places of Dinotopia?including the dinosaurs, who are portrayed in all their glory as they work, play, and learn side-by-side with humans. Dinotopia is whimsical, fantastic, and worthy of being read again and again by dinosaur enthusiasts of all ages.

Code of Dinotopia
Survival of all or none.
One rain drop raises the sea.
Weapons are enemies even to their owners.

Give more, take less.
Others first, self last.
Observe, listen, and learn.
Do one thing at a time.

Sing every day.
Exercise imagination.
Eat to live, don't live to eat.
