Former heroin addict Tommy Jarret, invigorated by the prospect of staying clean and writing a book about his newfound recovery, is suddenly found dead in his Strathbane chalet -- the victim of an apparent drug overdose. Lochdubh constable Hamish Macbeth, however, senses foul play. Recruited to work undercover with tough Glasgow Detective Inspector Olivia Chater as a husband and wife team, Macbeth dons Armani to dive into the underworld as an international drug baron -- and root out the Amsterdam drug cartel secretly entrenched in the Scottish Highlands.

The previous 14 books were different. In each of the earlier cases, part of the pleasure of the story is that someone bad "got their comeuppance." There is something deeply satisfying in reading that the person who should die, does. I still loved the story, and for the first time can understand how Blair can keep his job--he works with idiots who watch too many American TV cop shows and "dirty cop movies" and have lost whatever little common sense they were born with.
I suspect that some reviewers are reading this book without having read the precious books. READ THIS SERIES IN ORDER or you just won't "get it."

A classic Hamish Macbeth mystery. After the sudden death of an ex drug addict, Hamish not satisfied with the findings of the Strathbane detectives, goes undercover to uncover the truth. Full of all quirky characters, this is a typical British mystery. Lots of intrigue but no blood and gore.

Did not care for this story. Reading the drug deal setup was like watching a bad movie.

This is one of the best in this super series. The plot is fresh and the characters are deeper than usual. I highly recommend this one.
